Dec 3rd for deadline Dec 13th
Reread ch 7 for quiz and read ahead ch 14-16.Final essay this
term:
Compare the female figures in FLW and Tess, commenting on how they are
presented
and with what purpose.
You should begin by thinking about the ideas the author is constructing them
to represent. For example, Tess is a 'pure woman'. However, we also know that
she is subject to her destiny and/or genes. So, how is she introduced, and how
do our view of her at the dance and in later episodes influence our understanding
of theses two aspects? Remember, ideas of Respectability, Duty and the moral
'double standard' are relevant here.Sara,in contrast, is presented as a fallen
woman; although she is similarly deracinated by education, she is arguably
active and in control of key situations when Tess was arguably a passive and
a victim. Where do destiny and/or genes (ancestry and Darwinism) come in here?
Discuss both as being ahead of their time - /mutations? Does Sarah in any sense
educate Charles, and does Tess in any sense educate Angel? A valuable point of
comparison.
I think I have given you enough leads here.....over to you!
Jan 6th
Compare and contrast the presentation of Victorian society in the two novels.
Long essay with deadline MONDAY 19th. This may be amended in the light of agreed
staff policy for those resitting modules - check this site after staff meeting on Monday 12th.
UPDATE: the Head has now announced (staff briefing, Friday 7th) that A2 homework
assignments will continue as normal throughout the module resit period. The deadline
of Mon 19th therefore applies and you are expected to meet it.
You need to include:
rich and poor lifestyles
morality
gender relationships
religion
Additionally, you need to focus on the key word 'presentation'. Which characters
and events are constructed to present these aspects to the reader?
Deadlines
Coursework option students: read the marquee at the top of this page: deadlines are
now tight - your complete draft will need to be emailed to me by the last weekend
of half term. The class will still be working on chapters/revisiting and developing
the synoptic model. Email me mrcurr@mrcurr.co.uk for any assistance needed eg with
likely acceptability of titles. (The key here is to include the formula 'compare
and contrast......' and the word 'presentation'.)
Easter hols 2005
Hard luck - you have an extra long summer break this year, but
cannot afford to take a break now!
You need to
- finish reading Tess
- continue your very wide reading in all genres of WW1
literature, making note of brief, useful quotations
- prepare some starters
- write an answer to question 1b on the 2003 Jan synoptic
paper (note: if you missed the last lesson, you need to answer 1a
as well; the whole paper will take you 3 hrs)
- complete cw if you are doing this option; the FINAL is due in on
the first day back; if you submit your DRAFT then, this will
be submitted to the board as your FINAL effort.
- reread FLW.
It looks like a busy fortnight, but just think of those long
sunny summer days to come -AFTER the exams!
