Pre-1914 Prose Text - Your Guide to the Coursework Essay worth 10% for Literature and 5% for English

 

You will find here guides through some short stories by Charles Dickens that you may be studying for this coursework module if you are in my class. You are required to read a minimum of FIVE short stories and to refer in close detail to THREE of them in your essay. The five stories suggested are:

  • The Signalman (originally published as part of Mugby Junction)
  • The Trial for Murder
  • The Hanged Man's Bride
  • Confession Found in a Prison
  • A Christmas Carol

    Guidance is provided below on the first three of these stories. Your suggested title is: Choose THREE of the Dickens stories you have studied and show how each relates to the horror genre, referring to setting, atmosphere and how we are encouraged as readers to 'suspend disbelief'.
