Introduction
to my work on advertising
This section of the coursework, from 2004, is worth 5% of the total. Your work is assessed as writing to analyse/review/comment
From 2004, this section is assessed for attainment target 3; this
means that you must take special care with spelling, punctuation,
grammar and sentence construction. Good analysis of media texts alone
will not guarantee a good grade if 'basics' are weak.
Use these hints to help yourself write a top grade intro and
conclusion to your media coursework.
Para 1
Examine where you see and hear advertisements in modern western society.
Para 2
Distinguish display, classified and semi-display advertisements.
Paste in an example of classifieds and use arrows to show how
only basic information is included.
Explain why classifieds do not have to be eye-catching.
Para 3
Explain how display advertisements distract you
from the articles.
Explain half a dozen or so of the common persuasive 'appeals'
employed by advertisers.
Explain that these techniques are used cleverly so that often we
do not realise how our thoughts are being influenced.
Para 4
Explain that in this project you will do some of the following tasks:
you will explain a selection of
magazine advertisements in detail; you will explain a tv
advertisement in detail; you will design your own advertisement;
finally, you will draw some conclusions.
Click here for an example of an advert
using sex appeal or here for one using snob appeal.Note that you may
not use either of these two worked examples in your project.
